“Sovereign citizens,” Squatters and Tax Deeds

We have had actual cases where parties assert “sovereign law” or “sovereign citizenship” as some argument for not being required to pay real estate taxes. We even represented a client who fell victim to a “legal helper” that advised the client that “sovereign law” would protect the client from losing their property even though they failed to pay the real estate taxes and failed to redeem the tax sale. The client lost title to the property but we were able to mitigate the losses via a judgment against the Indemnity Fund.

This article highlights the dangers of “sovereign law” or “sovereign citizenship.” (Link courtesy of The News Item).
